What Is Juneteenth?
On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas with a long-overdue message: enslaved Black people were free. Now known as Juneteenth, this day marks the true end of slavery in America. In 2021 it became a federal holiday, but for Black communities it has always been sacred — a day to gather, to reflect, and to celebrate how far we have come while acknowledging how far we still have to go.
